Did you know that you can make coffee at home without a coffee machine?
Picture this: It’s a lazy Sunday morning, and you’re craving that perfect cup of coffee to kickstart your day. You walk to the kitchen, ready to fire up your trusted coffee machine, only to realize it isn’t working. Panic sets in—what now? This happened to me this morning, and I had to think of an alternate way to brew my coffee. That’s when I discovered the magic of making coffee by soaking ground beans. In this post, I will walk you through this surprisingly simple and effective method.
My Coffee Crisis
I finished yoga and journaling then started started grinding my coffee beans and walking about my room. I pulled out my Moka pot, put some water into the kettle to boil and then set up my space to brew. When it was time to put on my stove, I realized it wasn’t working. I don’t have a coffee machine and have always brewed with my Moka pot. Now this.
There I was, stuck with my freshly ground coffee and a growing determination to brew my coffee. First I asked Google for alternatives and settled for the easiest one. I ended up with a surprisingly good cup of coffee. Here’s how you can do it too.
What You Need
- Freshly ground coffee (coarse grind)
- Hot water (not boiling)
- A large jar or pitcher
- A spoon for stirring
- A fine-mesh sieve or coffee filter
- A mug for serving
How to Make Coffee at Home Without a Coffee Machine – 7 Easy Steps
1. Measure Your Coffee and Water
Start by measuring out your coffee and water. A good ratio is one ounce (about 28 grams) of coffee to every 16 ounces (475 millilitres) of water. Adjust the amount based on how much coffee you want to make. Confession – I do not yet measure my coffee but I know as I grow in my coffee experiment, I’ll learn to do that
2. Add Coffee Grounds to the Jar
Place the coffee grounds into your large jar or pitcher. Make sure the jar is clean and dry before you put the coffee grounds in it.
3. Heat Your Water
Since my stove chose violence against me, I used an electric kettle to heat my water. You want the water to be hot but not boiling. Let the water boil and then let it sit for 30 seconds to cool slightly.
4. Pour Water Over Coffee Grounds
Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds in the jar. Make sure all the grounds are saturated. Stir the mixture with a spoon to ensure the water gets everywhere.
5. Let It Steep
Cover the jar and let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes. This allows the water to extract all the delicious flavours from the coffee grounds. If you like a stronger brew, you can let it steep for a bit longer.
6. Strain the Coffee
After the coffee has steeped, it’s time to strain it. Place a fine-mesh sieve or coffee filter over your mug and pour the coffee through it to remove the grounds. If you’re using a sieve, you might want to strain it twice to catch all the finer particles. You have learned hoe to make coffee at home without a coffee machine.
7. Serve and Enjoy
Pour the strained coffee into your mug and enjoy! You can add milk, sugar, or any other preferred additions to your coffee.
Tips and Tricks
- Grind Size: Using a coarse grind helps prevent over-extraction and makes it easier to filter out the grounds.
- Water Temperature: Avoid boiling water, as it can scald the coffee and create a bitter taste.
- Steeping Time: Adjust the steeping time based on your taste preferences. Longer steeping will result in a stronger brew.
- Experiment: Feel free to experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios and steeping times to find your perfect cup.
Conclusion
Making coffee without a coffee machine or Moka pot might sound daunting, but it’s entirely doable and can result in a surprisingly good cup. When my stove stopped working, I was forced to think outside the box, and I’m glad I did. This method of soaking coffee grounds is not only a lifesaver in emergencies but also a fun and simple way to enjoy coffee at home. Like I have this morning.
