Introduction

My initial plan was to wait until the end of the month to write about how to make coffee at home using a Moka pot but after my first experience with one yesterday, the information cannot wait. My Moka pot is from Zuma Coffee, Abuja. You can get one at the shop and if you are not in Abuja or Nigeria, you can get a Moka pot here. You can get a grinder here.

In this post, I will share an easy-to-follow guide on how to use a moka pot to make coffee at home.

A Moka Pot is a stove-top coffee maker that brews coffee by passing hot water driven by vapour pressure through ground coffee.

Even as a coffee skeptic, there was something interesting about preparing to use my Moka pot to brew coffee for the first time. It was meant to be purely experimental, and in many ways it was, but it also felt deeply personal – making my coffee from scratch. All my imaginings about it didn’t meet up with the actual process.

The first time I saw my Moka pot, I fell in love with its sleek look. When I got home, I set it up on the table and looked at it for a while. I wasn’t sure if this was because of the coffee I was going to make or the fact that it was beautiful to look at. And felt like unwrapping a gift too.

I share that to let you know this first stage is totally normal. Go on and admire the beauty that is your Moka pot. Now, let’s get into how to use it to make your coffee at home.

Moka Pot First Use – Clean Your Moka Pot

Cleaning your moka pot before the first use is important. All manufacturing residues are removed by washing but be mindful of the type of chemical you use to wash so you do not hurt the pot. I remember carefully unscrewing my Moka pot and washing each component with warm, soapy water. Then I let it air dry. It was a simple and important step.

What You Need To Make Coffee At Home With A Moka Pot

Of course, you’ll need your trusty moka pot, some fresh coffee beans, a grinder, a spoon, a stove, and water. Below are the exact steps I used to make my first coffee. If you follow the steps, let me know how it went.

How To Make Coffee At Home -Step-by-step guide to Using a Moka pot:

  1. Start by grinding your coffee beans to a fine consistency. The grind size can affect the flavour of your coffee, so experiment to find what works best for you. I am still experimenting so more news on my progress by the end of the month.
  2. Fill the base of your moka pot with water up to the safety valve. I use hot water as was suggested and found out that hot water is better as you have less cooking time for the ground. Avoid overfilling, as this can lead to a bitter brew.
  3. Insert the filter basket into the base and fill it with your ground coffee. Use a spoon to level the coffee, but avoid pressing the ground too firmly. This is called tamping. Do not tamp the ground.
  4. Use a napkin to hold the base of the pot to avoid burns and screw the top part of the moka pot onto the base until secured tightly.
  5. Place the pot on a stove over medium heat.
  6. Keep an eye on the brewing process. I left my pot open until the brew started to trickle out then I closed it and listened for a gurgling sound. When you hear this sound, check that the coffee is pouring out consistently.
  7. Remove the moka pot from the heat and pour the coffee into your mug. Enjoy your own coffee that you made at home.

Cleaning Your Moka Pot After Use

After brewing, it’s important to clean your moka pot thoroughly. When I cleaned my Moka post after its first use, I let it cool completely, unscrewed it, washed each component using a soft sponge and soapy water, and air-dried them. When they were completely dried, I screwed them back on and placed them on my microwave for spontaneous viewing. I recently learned the moka pot can come apart more for deep cleaning. I shall share about my experience with deep cleaning when I do my first one. Cleaning your Moka pot after use guarantees that you have a ready pot whenever you want to make coffee at home.
